Sit back and let local actors bring to life scenes from a selection of works by talented playwrights from the Territory and beyond.
Sarah Reuben and Jeffrey Jay Fowler’s The Gifts is a family epic that unpacks the fraught art of gift giving and its sometimes unintended consequences. Sandra Thibodeaux’s Genius is a dark comedy inspired by the life and work of 17th century painter, Artemisia Gentileschi, that takes a paint-stained knife to the persistent issue of women’s harassment and abuse in the arts and society (CW: sexual assault; violence.) Rachael Chisholm, Betty Sweetlove and Ciella Williams’ Alien follows four characters trapped in a remote NT roadhouse, visited by alien interferences from the past that force them to confront their complex relationships to place and history.
After the readings, Brown’s Mart’s Artistic Associate, Cj Fraser-Bell, joins the playwrights for a discussion about the inspiration behind their work and the process of putting words on the stage.
Presented in partnership with Brown’s Mart as part of PlayFull. The Auslan interpretation of this event is made possible thanks to generous support from Brown’s Mart through the Northern Territory Government’s funding for Accessible Arts projects.
